State of the Union F. Nick Michaels,Intervalist 01.29.03-St. Louis, MO |
I had orginally determined that I would provide a critique/rant regarding President Bush’s State of the Union Address, but I got sick of hearing so many such critiques before I got a chance to pen my own. So instead, in the spirit of free information and brevity, I have provide below a condensed transcript of the speech so you can read Mr. Bush’s own words. The only alterations I have made include ommissions of unnecessary garble and applause and the appropriate changing of certain capitalizations. I hope you find Mr. Bush’s speech stirring, and I hope that this shortened format will make it easier to understand.

Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, members of Congress, distinguished citizens and fellow citizens, every year, by law and by custom, we meet here to consider the state of the union. This year, we gather in this chamber deeply aware of … our … vital … recession….
Our first goal is clear: We must have an economy … [w]ith unemployment…. I am proposing … this extra … marriage penalty … of $40,000…. And our plan … is good for … three or five or seven … Americans today. … It is not fair…. The best way to address the deficit … is to encourage … [f]ederal spending….
Our second goal is … health for all Americans … and … no coverage at all. These problems will not be solved …. Instead, … we must put doctors and nurses … in charge of … America. … [E]verybody pays more for health care….
Our third goal is to … devastate communities, kill wildlife and burn away millions of acres of treasured forests. … Tonight I’m proposing … that America … will … be powered by … and … dependent on foreign sources of energy.
Our fourth goal is … battered women…. I urge … my fellow citizens to … service … boys and girls … without guidance…. I propose a $450 million initiative to bring … addiction to drugs. … Tonight, let us bring to all Americans … the practice of partial-birth abortion. … [E]vil men … will continue helping … [a] doctor in rural South Africa … tell people, ‘You’ve got AIDS. We can’t help you. Go home and die’. … Ladies and gentlemen, … tonight I propose … 7 million new AIDS infections … in the most afflicted nations of Africa and the Caribbean.
This nation can lead the world in … the man-made evil of international terrorism. … There’s never a day when I do not … give an order … [t]o … many key commanders of Al Qaida. … We’ve got the terrorists…. This government is taking unprecedented measures … to protect this nation against … the FBI, the CIA, the Homeland Security and the Department of Defense…. Our government must … permit the triumph of violence in the affairs of men; free people will … seek and possess nuclear, chemical and biological weapons …for blackmail, terror and mass murder. They could also give or sell those weapons to terrorist allies…. America’s … ambitions of cruelty and murder had no limit. … And we accept this responsibility. … We have called on the United Nations to fulfill its … terrible threats to the civilized world. All free nations have a stake in … sudden and catastrophic attacks, and we’re asking them to join us…. [T]he United States supports their … oppressive regime … in … North Korea…. We now know that that regime … is working … to find … nuclear weapons…. [A]n even greater … Iraq … will … be permitted to dominate a vital region and threaten the United States. Twelve years ago, … the civilized world … gave Saddam Hussein … biological weapons materials sufficient to produce over 25,000 liters of anthrax; … to produce more than 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin; … to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent. … Inspectors recently turned up … no evidence that he has … them. The British government … has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production. … U.N. inspectors in … Iraq will be killed, along with their families. … Saddam Hussein … must provide … weapons to terrorists, or help them develop their own. … We will do everything in our power to make sure that … the threat is imminent. … And tonight I have a message for the brave and oppressed people of … [t]he United States…. Saddam Hussein … is God’s gift to humanity. …
Thank you.
